22 | ![]() | 1860 Federal Census in Mobile, Alabama.
Status: Located; Ellen Sheekey, sister of Bartholomew, in Mobile Al shown here in the census working as a servant in the Battle House Hotel. "On the auspicious site of Andrew Jackson’s old military headquarters in Mobile, Alabama, stands a hotel that was the center of local society for well over a century. Opened in 1852 by James and Samuel Battle, The Battle House soon became known as “Mobile’s Living Room,” as its grand halls were regularly graced by illustrious figures from celebrated debutantes and captains of industry to American presidents from Ulysses S. Grant to Woodrow Wilson. History aside, Battle House also figures largely in the collective memory of Mobile on a much more personal level. Many a local lady has danced the night away in the hotel’s splendid Crystal Ballroom at her own senior prom, debutante ball, or wedding reception, and every year during Carnival season, its ballrooms were always filled with glittering revelers. When it closed in 1974 after years of disrepair, many thought it was gone forever, the end of an era." | |
