      Deceased Name: Alice Pearl Beals 1911-2004

      AUGUSTA -- Alice P. Beals, 92, formerly of Waterville and
      Madison, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at MaineGeneral
      Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Gray Birch in Augusta.

      She had been residing at Granite Hill Estates in Hallowell prior
      to her illness.

      Alice was born Aug. 21, 1911, in Blaine, the daughter of Chester
      and Minnie (Boobar) Beals.

      She graduated from Brownville High School with the class of
      1928, was a graduate of Aroostook State Normal School and
      received a bachelor's degree from Farmington State Teachers

      Alice married Edwin B. Beals on Oct. 15, 1946, in Madison, where
      they spent 42 years of married life together.

      Her teaching career of 40 years included teaching in Anson Rural
      School; Garret Schenck School of Anson; a Seekonk, Mass. school,
      where she was principal and grade 1 teacher; and the Western
      Avenue School in Madison, where she taught grade 1 for 25 years,
      20 of which she served as principal.

      She was a member of the Somerset Retired Teachers, the Maine
      Teachers Association and the National Education Association; and
      a member of the United Baptist Church of Madison for more than
      68 years. She served as church organist for 25 years, served on
      several committees, taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and
      was a member and past president of the Lizzie C. Moore Philathea

      Alice enjoyed many hobbies, including knitting and crocheting.

      She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin B. Beals, in 1988; a
      sister, Elva Larson, in 1984; and a foster sister, Hattie

      She is survived by two stepsons, Earl B. Beals and his wife,
      Gwen, of Worcester, Mass., and Edwin Dale Beals and his wife,
      Rosalie, of Dudley, Mass.; a stepdaughter, Edwina Gail O'Day of
      Greenville, W.Va.; a sister, Esther B. Edwards of Hallowell; 14
      stepgrandchildren; 27 stepgreat-grandchildren; and several
      nieces and nephews.

      Visiting hours will be 1-3 p.m. Wednesday at Giberson Funeral
      Home, 40 Maple St., Madison. A funeral service will be held at 1
      p.m. Thursday at United Baptist Church, 43 Maple St., Madison,
      with the Rev. Richard Haynie officiating. Interment will occur
      later in the spring at Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison.

      In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial
      contribution to the Alice P. Beals Scholarship Fund of United
      Baptist Church, 43 Maple St., Madison 04950.
